ESCALANTE MINE

The Ranchers Exploration and Development Co. was a mining company incorporated in 1954 and based in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The company operated several mines, including the Escalante silver mine in southwestern Utah. In 1982, the Escalante Silver Mine was owned by Hecla Mining Co. and Redco Silver, Inc. The mine produced silver with general grades of 11 oz/ton Ag2. The mine is located in Iron County, Utah at an elevation of 5,285 feet. Ranchers Exploration took control of the Escalante property in 19752. Drilling and test mining began in 1979, and full mine development began in 19802. In 1984, Ranchers Exploration and Development Co. merged with Hecla Mining Co. Source​

Kidd Creek Mines

Kidd Creek Mine is currently owned and operated by Swiss multinational Glencore Inc. The mine is located in Timmins, Ontario, Canada and is the world’s deepest base-metal mine below sea level, mining at 9800 feet with shaft bottom at 9889 feet. In fact, Glencore Canada is spending US$44 million on drilling and a feasibility study in preparing for another deep mine expansion at Kidd Mine near Timmins.

On May 29, 1982, there was a fire at the Kidd Creek Mine in Timmins, Ontario. The fire started in a truck that was carrying explosives and quickly spread to the mine’s ventilation system. The fire caused the deaths of 5 miners and injured. The incident is considered one of the worst mining disasters in Canadian history. This information is currently being corroborated with Glencore.
