MOCATTA METALS CORPORATION

Mocatta Metals Corporation was founded in 1671 by Moses Mocatta, who opened an account with one of London’s most famous goldsmith bankers, Edward Backwell. The company became one of the world’s largest metals-trading businesses and the oldest member of London’s bullion market. By 1957, the business was acquired by the merchant bank Hambros Bank and was renamed Mocatta and Goldsmid Limited, with Jock and Edgar Mocatta serving as managing directors. In 1969, Mocatta Metal Corporation was created in New York and through Hambros Bank, Mocatta and Goldsmid took a 50% share. Mocatta Metals Corporation was later on acquired by Johnson Matthey in 1997.
